You have to write a good reference letter so that the person asking for a reference letter gets benefited out it. Just for that you cannot write anything that is not a fact. See whether they have given your name as reference. If so you can agree to write a reference letter. Do not write any vague statements when you give a reference letter. See that the reference letter you have given is submitted to proper persons by the requested person. If a person requests a reference letter for applying for a particular position, then you can highlight the characteristics that benefit the person for that particular position. Do not give your opinions and if so state that it is an opinion clearly. If you give an opinion you have to state why you think so based on some fact. Document everything that you give to the person. Any information that might do harm to their reputation should not be given in a reference.
