If you have a walker and need to use the stairs without a railing, there are a few things you can do to stay safe.

(1) Make sure that the walker is in front of you and that your hands are gripping the handrails.

(2) Next, take small steps and keep your body close to the center of the staircase.

(3) Move slowly and carefully to avoid losing your balance.

If the staircase is straight, place the walker in front of you at the bottom of the stairs. Then, grip each handrail tightly and use your legs to lift the walker and yourself up each step.

If the staircase is curved or has a landing, you will need to adjust your position accordingly. For example, if the staircase curves to the right, you will want to place the walker to your right side so that it can act as support while you follow the curve with your body.

The same goes for going downstairs – if the staircase curves to the right, hold onto the handrail with your right hand and place your left hand on top of the walker handle for stability. Center your body over both legs before taking each step down.
