A virtual memory is the memory in the hard drive that is used just like the RAM to improve the performance of the system. You can specify the size of the virtual memory yourself or let the computer manage it. You can increase the virtual memory yourself manually if needed to improve the performance. To do this, right click the My Computer icon in your desktop and select Properties. Now click the performance tab and click virtual memory. In Windows XP you can use the Advanced tab and click settings in the Performance block. Then again in the advanced tab you will find a ?change? button in the ?virtual memory? block. Click this and you can change it to any value. It is better to note down the current settings in the virtual memory block so that you can use the same value if you want to return to the old settings. There is also an option to let computer manage the virtual memory by itself. You can use this if you encounter any problem in performance. Restart your system for the change to get into effect.
