Ultrasound finds it used in many industries and the most important application of ultrasound is its use in getting a picture of the fetus in the uterus. Ultrasound use sound waves hence it is safe to use for such applications whereas in the case of X-Rays radiation is used and this might harm the fetus. Sound waves are bounced back from the fetus and the reflected waves are analyzed to form the picture of the fetus in the uterus. Using this technique to form a moving image or a still picture is called sonogram or sonography. Technology of using ultrasound has improved to such levels now it is possible to get 3D images of the fetus. Some of the medical centers have these facilities. If some birth defects are suspected the medical practitioner might go for a 3D image. A moving 3D image which is referred to as 4D ultrasound is also possible. If properly used ultrasound is safer for the mother and the baby.
