An optical mouse is a device that is used for communication between a computer and the end user. It is one of the input devices that you use along with your computer. It is superior to the conventional mechanical mouse that you would have used earlier. The important parts that works in an optical mouse is the LED, a CMOS sensor and a Digital Signal Processor. If you have used an optical mouse you would have seen a red LED that emits light to the surface in which the mouse is placed. The red light is reflected back to a CMOS sensor and the image of the surface that is captured is sent to the Digital Signal Processor (DSP). The DSP compares the images that are received from time to time when the mouse is moved.

On comparing the images, the DSP will find out the speed and in which direction the mouse has been moved. It finds out the coordinates and that detail is sent to the computer. Once this detail is received by the computer, the mouse pointer on the screen, moves to that coordinate.
