The specific features of any subject are what that makes you recognize a particular subject. So when you distort the subject intentionally, you should take care that the subject is always recognizable. Hence it is not that easy to distort the features of the subject to create a caricature. In caricature the subject?s special features are exaggerated to make it more comic or grotesque. Hence careful exaggeration is necessary to keep the interest in the subject by the audience. So if you see a known person in a cartoon then it is a caricature. You should keep in mind that a caricature need not be a cartoon alone. It could be a painting, a sculpture, or even a photograph. For example if you are drawing a portrait and you have unintentionally drawn the features in different proportions and still if the person in the portrait is recognizable then it could be treated as a caricature. So whether it was intentional or unintentional, a caricature is a caricature.
